Underground Oil Tank Removal in Westchester County
Buried steel heating oil tanks were never meant to last forever. The New York State DEC calls removal the best choice, because it lets the soil be checked and prevents the tank from collapsing into a sinkhole later.
Signs you need this
- A fill pipe or vent pipe sticking out of the lawn or driveway
- You heat with gas but there is an old oil fill pipe outside
- A buyer, lender or insurer asked about a buried tank
- Higher oil use than normal with no explanation
What to know
- The NYS DEC puts typical removal cost at $1,000 to $5,000, depending on tank size, condition and how easy it is to reach.
- State rules require the tank to be emptied, cleaned and purged of vapors, and the fill and vent lines removed or capped.
- Westchester municipalities require a permit or inspection. In Pleasantville, for example, the building department issues the permit and inspects the removal.
- Soil samples are taken at removal. If they show contamination, the soil has to be cleaned up to county and state standards.
