Soil Testing and Leak Cleanup in Westchester County
The only way to know whether an old tank leaked is to test the soil around it. In Westchester, samples are sent to a lab, and if they show contamination the soil has to be removed to the satisfaction of the County Health Department and the DEC.
Signs you need this
- Oil odor in the basement or yard
- A sheen in a sump pit or French drain
- Dead patches of grass near the fill pipe
- Your well water tastes or smells strange
What to know
- Soil samples are taken whether or not contamination is visible.
- If a leak is found, report it to the NYS DEC Spills Hotline at 1-800-457-7362.
- Leak cleanup can run into tens of thousands of dollars, and many homeowner policies have a pollution exclusion. Check yours.
- Get the lab results and the cleanup sign-off in writing. A buyer will ask for them.
